In the cinema. At home.
The festival edition 2023
As always, DOK.fest München opens the view out to the world: with 130 of the best and most current international documentaries from 55 countries. Our goal is the greatest possible participation in our films, which is why we bring them to the big screen in Munich cinemas as well as to home screens throughout Germany: DOK.fest stays dual!
Adele Kohout and Daniel Sponsel (festival management): "We can access information anytime and anywhere, but rarely take the time to review or question it anymore. This is exactly where documentary film comes in and offers us to discover, immerse and reflect. Documentaries enable us to understand our increasingly complex world in many ways. They allow us to see the world from different perspectives. We are proud to once again present a programme that takes this complexity into account."
With top-class competitions, numerous specials and intensive film discussions, the programme brings together the highlights of current documentary filmmaking: Our opening film ETILAAT ROZ shows in a stirring chamber play the last days of the most widely read newspaper in liberal Kabul shortly before the Taliban invaded. We take a look at Turkey with our guest country series, dedicate our homage to the work of renowned Austrian director Nikolaus Geyrhalter and present a retrospective of African cinema.
This year's DOK.focus thematic series questions the role and power(-lessness) of our media in POWER OF MEDIA?, while the Student Award, as every year, presents outstanding documentary films by students from German-language film schools.
At DOK.forum, the industry meets to discuss the perspective of documentary storytelling. For children, young people and schools, DOK.education offers its own film programme with media education workshops.
We present 28 world premieres, 13 international premieres and 45 German premieres on 19 festival days.
Among the directors, men are only slightly in the majority this year with 51 percent. 45 percent of the filmmakers are female, 4 percent diverse. "Documentary film in particular is a seismograph and mirror of social change. We are happy that we can present diversity in every respect and that the times are over when film festivals primarily screened films by directors and only this view of the world was represented," says the festival direction.
