Close-up: Poland
HFF Screenings of the Television Journalism Department
Poland with its capital Warsaw has become a foreign neighbour. The national-conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) has been in power since 2015. It has taken control of the media and the judiciary, is suspending democratic rules and is turning its back on Europe. A wall is even to be built against refugees from Belarus. Where is neighbour Poland heading, whose relations with Germany have always been considered difficult and strained for historical reasons? The close-up trip to Warsaw ended just on the day when Russia attacked Ukraine and Poland became a frontline state. In 5 close-ups we show Polish realities, from the struggle for freedom of expression and women's rights to the situation in the Upper Silesian coalfield, refugee policy and the resurgence of Judaism.
