SELBSTBESCHREIBUNG
Germany 2001 – Director: Georg Stefan Troller – Original language: German – Length: 86 min.
Georg Stefan Troller, born in Vienna in 1921, crossed half of Europe as a refugee only to return with the US army in 1945 . As a filmmaker he became a chronicler of his time and with this film he engages in some bold and self-ironic navel gazing.
Georg Stefan Troller
Born in 1921 in Vienna to Jewish parents, Georg Stefan Troller had to flee from the Nazi regime to the United States when he was only 17 years old. After the end of the war, he returned for a short period of time, but soon went back to the United States, in order to attend university there. From 1946 until 1949, he obtained a degree in English Studies (Anglistics) in Los Angeles as well as a degree in Theatre Studies in New York. In 1949 he settled in Paris and started working as a radio reporter for the Radio in the American Sector. Starting in the 1950s, he increasingly began to work for television. His “Paris Journals”, which he produced for the WDR from 1962 onwards are a legendary part of German television history. Moreover, his so-called “Personenbeschreibungen” (personal descriptions), which he published for the ZDF from 1972 onwards have received multiple awards. Besides his profession as a filmmaker, Georg Stefan Troller also works as an author.
