Review of the 37th DOK.fest München
In the cinema. At home. The first dual festival edition 2022
THANK YOU for a great dual DOK.fest München!
On Sunday, 22 May 2022, the 37th DOK.fest München marked the end of the first dual edition of the festival: we look back on a phenomenal and diverse 19 days full of film experiences in the cinema and at home, as well as wonderful encounters with our guests and you, our viewers. A sincere thank you to our audience, our guests as well as partners and sponsors for celebrating this seminal moment in the history of DOK.fest München with us!
Our review: festival mood and the right time for duality
At the first dual edition of DOK.fest München, almost 47,000 guests saw the films or attended the festival events. Around 25,300 viewers and guests were counted on site in Munich. The films were viewed 21,500 times online on the digital screen, although it is not possible to determine how many viewers were sitting in front of the digital screen in each case.
DOK.forum, the industry platform of DOK.fest München, took place for the first time as a hybrid event: From 04 to 12 May, the guests were on site, digitally connected – or both. International industry guests came together again in Munich after two years and discussed (partly in hybrid form) current topics of the industry. A total of 2,700 people took part in the DOK.forum events. The "School of Seeing" of the DOK.education programme returned to the cinema this year with short films for three age groups. 28 classes with almost 700 children and young people attended the 90-minute film education workshops. For the first time, the seminars took place at the HFF Munich. At the same time, teachers across Germany were able to use the films and digital teaching units, including accompanying materials, online: 3,759 pupils registered for this.
Daniel Sponsel and Adele Kohout (festival management): "We are very pleased with our first dual edition: we are back in the cinema and have also created a barrier-free offer for all those who are interested in relevant and artistic documentary film and could not attend the events in Munich. The number of visitors is lower than in previous years, which reflects the current basic mood towards all cultural offerings. The reasons for this are manifold and after two pandemic years it is to be hoped that this is a snapshot marking the beginning of a return of culture. The popularity of both the events with guests in the cinema and the lively participation on the digital screen prove that our decision to hold the festival dual was the right one and makes us optimistic about the next edition."
We look forward to seeing you at the 38th DOK.fest München from 03 to 21 May 2023!
