Contemporary documentary films on politics and society – Stories of war

With the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, war as a violent intrusion into civilian life, as a brutal overwriting of everyday life and dreams of the future, has once again created bitter realities in the centre of Europe. The series shows four current documentary films that deal with different stories of war: With the perspective of courageous US women in the Second World War who made history as war reporters, with stirring scenes from theatres of war in the Ukraine war full of cruelty, but also of touching generosity and solidarity, and finally with the question of how the traumas suffered up to 1945 were passed on from generation to generation – so how much of the war is in us?

Note: The films contain explicit depictions of violence, death and war.

They were pioneers: as war correspondents, Martha Gellhorn, Margret Bourke-White and Lee Miller reported direct from the frontlines during the second world war and in doing so were among the first women in history to cast their gaze on the “male craft” of war. An impressive film about the horrors of war composed exclusively of their writing, photographs and film footage shot by the allies. Monika Haas
