BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE WIDE BLUE SEA
D 2005 – Director: Romuald Karmakar – Original language: English – Length: 90 min.
Come and feel the beats. Romuald Karmakar takes us on a journey into the pulsing world of electronic music through performances by some of the stars of the European scene including Captain Comatose, Xlover, Cobra Killer, Fixmer/McCarthy, die Lotterboys, Tarwater, T.Raumschmiere, Rechenzentrum and Alter Ego, whose hit single "Rocker" was filmed in Ibiza's world famous club Amnesia with the tranced out audience in the foreground.
Without commentary or interviews and using a visual style that eschews the MTV aesthetic usually found in music documentaries, Karmakar’s film lets the music and the energy of its performers speak for themselves. Long sequence shots allow us to fully appreciate both the structure of the songs and the relationship between sound, image and performance. Between the Devil and the Wide Blue Sea is an illuminating insight into an underground scene that has slowly become a global phenomenon.
