nextus – learning by documentaries

Join Nextus, the European film education platform that enables the transnational use of documentary feature films, clips, and educational materials in the classroom.

The world in moving pictures – Learning with documentary feature-length films

With the film education platform Nextus, an international film festival association enables a special learning experience. Through a curated selection of documentaries on curriculum-relevant topics—such as art and society, science and technology, history, and nature—students gain insight into diverse realities of life. The program is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

A European team of teachers, film experts, and media educators has selected award-winning documentaries that stand out from conventional formats due to their distinctive narrative approach. These films go beyond presenting facts; they bring personal stories to life, creating an emotional connection that deeply resonates with students. In addition to feature-length films, Nextus provides thematic film clips and curated clip collections for classroom use, along with teaching materials to facilitate in-depth discussions and follow-up activities.

With Nextus, we not only promote film literacy but also foster a European approach to education—bridging classrooms across national borders.

Nextus is funded by MEDIA – Creative Europe. This grants you free access to all content and the opportunity to book customized training sessions at your school.

Nextus is a collaborative project by DocsBarcelona, Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Indielisboa, Sottodiciotto Film Festival, Makedox and DOK.education, the educational programme of DOK.fest München. The Catalan pilot project was initiated under the name Learning By Docs Europe in 2020.
